"I told you to Root it!" I yelled and shot Katya a mean look. She scowled and waved me off as if I were talking to a wall. I scowled in turn and looked back to the monstrous creature in front of me.

"Don’t die!" Katya shot back and blew me a kiss. I sighed inwardly and stared the monster straight in the eyes. Who would have thought a fucking Minotaur would be guarding a simple level 30 dungeon.

"Die!" the Minotaur bellowed and swung its ax. It was only pure luck I managed to bend my body just enough to slip under its weapon. Cold sweat dripped down my forehead as I got to all fours and then got up. Using my Vampiric speed, I closed in and raked my claws across the Minotaur’s left leg. Deep gashes appeared above its kneecap. It reared back and swept its ax again at me.

Tiny bubbles swarmed the creature from its left. It turned its gaze at Scarlet, my fairy healer. I could swear that it looked at her as if it wanted to take and not kill her. The boss mobs really had some messed up AIs.

"Scarlet? I doubt he’d fit!" Katya called and laughed madly. I couldn’t believe they were going at it again during such a time.

"With the number of cocks you’ve accommodated, you would surely be a better fit! Now get it off me!" she cried back and turned to flee.

"Enough is enough, Katya," I said coldly and rounded on its back. I activated my three skill combo and did some nasty damage. At least I got his attention again.

The Minotaur turned its bulky frame around and slammed his fist into my chest. It felt like someone had crushed all my ribs in one fell strike as I flew through the air.

You have sustained 2.331 damage from Minotaur: You have regained 1.774 health from Scarlet.

My girl! She really was a lifesaver, and much quicker to act compared to Katya. I’d need to teach her a lesson or about playing around in these situations. After all, I was no tank, and if you added the fact that we couldn’t fully disable our pain sliders, getting hit was nasty.

I turned in midair and landed on all fours, and slid in the sand for a couple foot before I got up. A hail of arrows slammed into the creature’s back. Half of them bounced off, but one slid in perfectly.

It must have been her Armor Break, I thought.

"Root it!" I yelled and attacked it again. Its ax barreled down at my head, and only thanks to another arrow that slightly deflected the weapon did I manage to catch it on my metal claws. The Minotaur stopped moving as if he had frozen up. Tiny tendrils shot up from the rocky ground and enveloped its whole body, from the feet up to the head.

"You got five seconds!" Katya shot back and prepared another armor break. I could see it from her stance. Good, the less defense the creature had, the more damage we could dish out.

"Vampiric Rage. Blood Surge." I activated my only two buffs and felt the power course through my blood. With a swirl, I got behind my opponent and activated my usual combo, and for now, the only one I had.

"Here," Scarlet said and a green aura enveloped me and renewed the three buffs she’d cast on me. I didn’t reply, instead following through with my attack.

"Double Slash. Rending Claw. Death Stalk."

You have inflicted 11.233 damage on Minotaur: You have inflicted 16.781 damage on Minotaur.

You have inflicted 22.237 damage on Minotaur.

The health bar above its head hadn’t dropped much. Maybe three percent? I sighed and kept on attacking the creature with normal attacks, all aimed at its wounded left leg. With two seconds left, I found myself looking at the debuff icon. Score one for me.

The minotaur roared again thrust both of its arms in the air. My ears felt like they were about to pop. His breath wasn’t anything to write home about either. I almost retched as the stench of death coming from its mouth filled my nostrils.

"Boom!" Natalia whispered. A gigantic fireball dropped from overhead and set the creature aflame. The damage was minor, but the knockback wasn’t, as the force of it knocked it over flat on its back.

"Took you long enough!" Scarlet said in her high-pitched voice. It must have been from the excitement, as she usually tried to hide it and did very well.

"I was knocked out! What did you expect me to do? Fight while I was out?"

"Vines incoming," Katya added and shot a round of five arrows. Four arrows struck its limbs, while the fifth struck the head of the beast. Thick, green vines sprouted from the ground and entangled the huge creature in their embrace. The temperature around me dropped instantly as they appeared. Their health bar grew slightly and kept regenerating. They loved heat in moderation.

I just atop of the creature’s chest and slashed madly at its neck. It tried to shrug me off, but the vines held for the moment. Three out of seven hits were critical and whittled away at its health bar quite marvelously and added poison stack after stack, which only increased my own attack.

Another Armor Break struck home, just as I was about unleash my combo. The damage skyrocketed with the critical damage.

"Fifty nine percent to go!" Natalia called. "I’ve just inspected it, so no need to do so as well."

Right, and there I thought it would have been a nice idea to
take a break and check him myself. Bah. I was annoyed beyond measure to have to be the tank, the lure, and the DPS. I ran around more than I attacked!

The monster’s left leg shot up and freed itself from the vines. It still struggled with its arms and neck, but the vines’ health bars were quite low. As on cue, two healing spells targeted at both arms brought them up to about thirty percent. I’d gained another few seconds.

I rebuffed once more and activated my combo for who knew which time in this fight. Its health bar came to just under fifty percent. Both of its arms came free at the same time. Then he brought his fists together, catching me in between them.

You have sustained 2.991 damage from Minotaur: You have sustained Stun. Duration: 3 seconds.

As if things hadn’t been bad enough, I was now almost dead and stunned as well. Both of Scarlet’s heals lit me up like a green bonfire, bringing me up to above seventy percent, but that didn’t matter, it wouldn’t be enough to survive another one of those. The Minotaur shoved my limp body off its chest and grabbed the ax as it got up again.

An image shot up before my face.

The last boss stage has been activated: Minotaur status points +30%. Duration: permanent.

"Fuck this shit!" I cried out and darted away from the monster. "He hurt me like a goddamn motherf--!"

"No swearing!" Natalia yelled and dropped her stun AoE. I had gained three seconds at most from her attack. I stopped in my tracks. The dilemma of going back or staying weighed hard on me. Sweat trickled down my forehead and my back. The Minotaur decided for me, however, and charged my small frame.

"Oh fuck," was all I managed to say as the creature caught up to me in three leaps and swung its ax against my raised claws. But nothing happened. Nothing except a massive shield that landed in between me and the charging behemoth. An angry bellow left its giant, rotting mouth as the top of its right horn chipped off during the clash.

I looked up only to scowl when I saw what saved me. A green giant of an Orc. In his right hand, he held a massive battle ax, while holding a tower shield in his left. What’s more, he had the same armor set on as we did, the King Scorpion one. The gold glimmered in what little sunlight there was. So not fair. Mine wasn’t as shiny.

"Dinethal to your service!" the Orc said in all chat.

"You alone here, big guy?" I asked in turn and got up. Be it on instinct or subconsciously, but I hid behind his big shield. That thing had held back the Minotaur, so it must have been quite sturdy.

"Yep. Been practicing my moves, and boy am I good. Did you see how I just reflected his horn attack?"

"Yeah… Speaking of which, do you want to join us in killing this beast? It’s getting quite tough without a tank."

"What do I get in turn," he asked and slammed his shield against the creature. A stun debuff appeared and counted down from three.

"Wait, what? You should be more than thrilled to join myself and these fine ladies."

  He shrugged.

"Don’t care. Unless they want to join me later on, I’d be fine with that."

I scowled at his brazen attitude, but I couldn’t help to chuckle. I liked the guy. He was straightforward, and looked like he meant business.

  "Very well. You can have--"

"Hell no!" all three women cursed at the same time. "Don’t even go there!" Natalia added and threw a rock at me.

  "Hey! Stop it you idiot!"

"You’re the idiot for offering us to him! Minus ten points for you, mister!" Katya added as well. I looked up and found the counter at one second.

"Anything else I could offer you?" I pleaded. I had no idea why I did that, but something told me this guy would be of massive use to us.

"Sure. I want to be a part of your little group. I’ve heard an interesting little rumor going on about you and your girls. They say that you’re the guy that died during the 25th WR. Any truth to that?"

He looked back at me and smirked. My eyes grew wide as the creature charged him again, but he didn’t look phased in the least.

"What do you say?" I asked in team chat.

"Don’t care. As long as you don’t plan to share us with him. They say that Orcs have big cocks."

"Katya!" Scarlet yelled. "Do you really have to be so blunt?"

"Whatever. As long as he doesn’t hit on me. And you’re a sad excuse for a tank anyway. Better to have a real one around."

I sighed and dropped my shoulders. It felt so good knowing they trusted me with their lives. Not!

"Accept the party invite. We can discuss more about it later," I said and sent him an invitation. His name appeared under Natalia’s. Dinethal. Level 32, Orc tank.

  2

Dinethal proved to be more than I could handle. His moves were almost perfect. Every sidestep, every block, every counter and every set up was beyond what Dave had been able to do at his level. Knowing that Katya had done a number on us and re-rolled from her Valkyrie to a Ranger, it was highly possible this was the case with him as well. I’d come to love her in the last few weeks after she came clean, so it wasn’t like she’d done us any harm.

I sighed and tried to shake away the thoughts of her treachery and focused on the beast. It was at roughly twenty percent left, but mostly stunned in place, or focused on Dinethal.

"Root," Katya called and cast her root barrage. He’d gained five seconds to rest up in which I released a barrage of attacks. Seven percent down, thirteen to go. Katya kept up her arrow barrage, striking the creature from the back, together with Natalia who kept showering the beast with fireballs. Scarlet didn’t see any need to shoot her bubbles with us five in a party, so she lounged around on a patch of grass and shot us the occasional buff or heal.

"Do you need an extra buff, Aiden?" he asked once the root timer was at one second.

"You have some and didn’t bother to offer before now?" I shot back, a state of shock on my face. I had exaggerated a bit, but who cared. A buff was a buff.

"Nothing special. Defense and base attack. Do you want them?"

  "Of course I do!"

He snickered and nodded his big, green head. What irked me even more was the fact that his voice didn’t match the Orc character. Sure, it was low, but it sounded somehow childish.

"Stalwart! Brandish!" he yelled and held up his shield first and then ax. Two new icons appeared next to my name, one of a shield, and one of an ax. A twenty percent increase in defense and fifteen in attack. I sighed and shook my head.

"Seriously dude. This is something I need, not want, but need. Next time, just hit me with every buff you got!"

Dineth snickered again and rushed the Minotaur. His shield slammed straight into the creature’s face, but the monster wasn’t stunned this time. The monster knocked his shield aside and struck his chest with the monstrous ax. I could see his health go down by about a quarter, and sighed anew.

"Shit man. That blow would have at least halved me, if not outright killed my weak body. That shit’s not fair at all."

"Then you should have taken a tank. And let’s be honest here," he replied and charged the Minotaur like a bull in a china shop. With an otherworldly battlecry, Dineth slammed his head against the monster’s face. The horns atop of his helmet drew blood, and somehow dazed the creature.

"Now that’s what I call in close and personal!" I hooted after him and darted in close behind the beast. My combo struck its weakened left leg, but it never gave way. However, the damage done brought the creature down to about two percent.

"Hell yes, brother! Now look at what I can do!"

Dineth threw aside the shield and got out another battle ax that looked slightly different and smaller than the other one. His emerald green skin turned crimson red, just as his body doubled in size.

  "What the--"

"Die!" he roared and jumped the Minotaur. With his left ax, he deflected the monster’s weapon and leaned in, and struck a critical hit with his right. The Minotaur struggled to stay up after the hit, and wobbled on both legs as if it were dazed
. I didn’t wait to be outdone by a tank, Orc no less.

My wicked talons sang a melody of death as I carved into the monster. Within the next thirty seconds, the boss monster died and crumbled into a heap of meat and bone, the ax beside its corpse. I sighed in relief and dropped next to the creature. Dinethal shifted back green again and brought out his tower shield. He winked and sat down beside me.

"I don’t run both ways," I said and lifted my right eyebrow. In all honesty, I couldn’t care less about his orientation, but if you put a Fairy, an Elf and a Banshee to one side, and an Orc on another, I doubted anyone would choose the latter. Banshees wouldn’t be high on my list normally, but they’d come up with some nifty cosmetic items.

"Neither do I. But wasn’t that cool? I’m like a tank and a DPS in one!" he said enthusiastically.

"Yeah, it is," I replied and planted my ass two foot away from him. "Speaking of which, why the hell did you shift color and grow like two times in size?"

"Special skill, man. There’s only five of us around that have it at this moment in time, man." He shifted gears and started waving his arms around, explaining his unique situation to me.
